Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly met with the governor of North Carolina last week.
The interest comes just four months after Amazon put Northern Virginia on its list of 20 finalists for its own 50,000-employee second headquarters, dubbed HQ2.
However, now The Washington Post is reporting that Apple is also considering a spot in Northern Virginia.
Apple's move into North Carolina is expected to consist of two stages: a 1,000-employee leased site off Weston Parkway in Cary, followed by a move to a 300-acre site in Research Triangle Park in Wake County. Apple's total investment would likely be between $1.5 billion and $2 billion, with jobs - predominantly in R&D - paying an average of $130,000 per year. Apple in January said it was planning on building a new U.S. campus.
Apple's decision to open a new headquarters in North Carolina is reportedly a "done deal" as soon as a bill is passed approving a series of incentives for Apple. Additionally, the region is home to several universities including Duke, The University of North Carolina and North Carolina State. Where Amazon has been overt with its plans, leading to many public subsidy offers from states, and some protests from local residents, Apple is being far more secretive and has only promised to announce new plans for its future investment in us facilities later this year.

Tens of thousands of the world's brightest technology developers could be heading to Northern Virginia in the next few years, as two of the world's largest tech companies are said to be considering building their next facilities there. According to a report from WRAL.com, North Carolina was Apple's favored location from the beginning.
Apple's new "spaceship" headquarters in Cupertino, named Apple Park, has been called an architectural landmark. One source said that Apple would start with 3,000 new jobs, expanding to between 5,000 and 10,000 employees over the long term.
Citing various sources in the legal, real estate, and state government sectors, The Triangle Business Journal reported on Wednesday that the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill - an area referred to also as Triangle Research Park - are now at the top of Apple's short list of potential locations for its upcoming campus development.
