The Juventus manager is on the shortlist to replace Arsene Wenger, who will stand down as Arsenal boss after the Huddersfield match later today (3pm) after 22 years at the helm.

The Manchester Evening News is reporting that the Gunners are considering the Manchester City assistant boss as a genuine contender to take over from Wenger at The Emirates.

Mikel Arteta has emerged as the strongest rival to Max Allegri for the Arsenal job with the club moving closer to settling on a preferred candidate.

The appointment of a young coach would also ensure new head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, and director of football relations, Raul Sanlehi, would retain their newly acquired authority.

The favourite for the job with bookmakers and many fans and pundits is Allegri, but Arteta is firmly in the mix and although the Gunners appear to be the front runners I don't get the feeling they are the only names in the frame.

Those with direct and indirect knowledge have commended the way in which the Gunners hierarchy are going about their business.
