AT&T paid Trump lawyer to advise on Time Warner deal

Kasowitz, who was Trump's lead lawyer in the Russian Federation investigation for a brief period a year ago, has reportedly still been involved in advising the president in the case.

Much has been made of the payment to Cohen, which was arranged reportedly just three days after Trump was sworn in.

In 1994, Cohen married Laura Shusterman, the daughter of a Soviet emigre who was in the notoriously rough-and-tumble taxi business in the Big Apple. One source familiar with DOJ's thinking said the antitrust team finds it "ironic" that AT&T was paying Cohen in what they believe was an effort to politically influence the department's decision while at the same time saying the department's decision was being influenced by politics.

The coveted medallions were once valued at more than $1 million each, but their value has plummeted with the arrival of ride-hailing services such as Uber. Cohen resigned from the Trump Organization in January 2017.

The United States imposed sanctions last month on Vekselberg and Renova to retaliate for the Kremlin's suspected meddling in the 2016 usa election and other "malign activity". The Trump administration opposed the AT&T effort, and the Department of Justice filed suit to block the merger in November past year.

The spotlight was thrust on Cohen after the attorney for adult actress Stormy Daniels, Michael Avenatti, alleged the lawyer had received $500,000 from Columbus Nova, whose biggest client is the Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg.

The payments were revealed by the man who has become Cohen's nemesis, Michael Avenatti, the lawyer who is seeking to release Daniels from the "hush agreement" she signed with Essential Consultants.

Liz Bilney, Leave.EU chief executive, has also been referred to the police under suspicion of having committed criminal offences.

The Washington Post reported that the internal documents it saw specified that Cohen would provide the company advice on its merger with Time Warner.

A spokesman for Korea Aerospace Industries said the company had signed a contract with Essential Consultants a year ago for legal consulting concerning accounting standards on production costs, and upon the expiration of the contract, made a payment in November.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders referred questions about Cohen to Trump's outside counsel, but said Cohen's private business dealings did not involve the administration.

"He imagined himself as chief of staff", the Times said.

Any work Cohen did with Kasowitz in 2017 could take on new relevance since the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Cohen's home and office last month.

In a tweet last month, Trump described Cohen as "a fine person with a wonderful family".

"I subsequently thought better of the idea of selling domain names which obviously now have connotations that are inconsistent with my moral beliefs", the statement reads, adding, "I never told my brother or anyone else at Columbus Nova that I had done this".
