Baboon escapes from crate at Texas San Antonio International Airport on Monday

A baboon escaped its wooden crate at the San Antonio airport on Monday after an American Airline flight from Chicago and ran around for almost an hour, eluding airport staff, according to airport spokeswoman Evelynn Bailey.

According to American Airlines, the baboon was flying to San Antonio to be placed at the Born Free Primate Sanctuary in La Salle County, Texas.

Dawkins had been part of an animal testing operation at Brown University before being "retired from research protocols".

No passengers or flights have been affected. According to an airport spokesperson, San Antonio International Airport is one of only a handful of airports in the country that employs a wildlife biologist.

American Airlines released a statement on the matter, saying they flew in the baboon from Chicago O'Hare Airport as part of its relocation to the sanctuary. The airport said the monkey was captured, but only after it swung around in the baggage area.

Airport officials did call for backup from the San Antonio Zoo and others who have a better understanding of how to calm a monkey down. The animal, later identified as a rhesus macaque named Dawkins, was tranquilized two hours after initially escaping and transported to a sanctuary, KSAT reported.

This is the second time this year that man's closest relative in the animal kingdom was able to escape its human-made enclosure in Texas.
