Bill Gates says US president Donald Trump asked if HIV and HPV were the same thing

Bill Gates, 62, relayed a story about how he's had two conversations with the president and both times the topic of vaccines came up. "So I was able to explain that those are rarely confused with each other".

MSNBC's "All in With Chris Hayes" aired footage Thursday night of the Microsoft founder speaking at a Gates Foundation event, telling the crowd about two meetings he had with Trump, one at Trump Tower during the presidential transition and another at the White House past year.

About 20 minutes after talking to Jennifer at the event, Gates said Trump reappeared in style, flying in on a helicopter to the same place he had just been. "So clearly he'd been driven away but he wanted to make a grand entrance in a helicopter".

Gates said on both occasions that Trump had also asked him what he though about vaccines. "Melinda didn't like that too well." .

"I'll take his framework and explain why things like health security and continued foreign aid, even in that narrow framework, where you give no credit for saving lives in Africa, kind of pure humanitarian things, even without that, this is money well spent", Gates told the outlet. One of the meetings occurred during the presidential transition, and the other in 2017.

"And I thought, 'Wow, but you're Trump.' I didn't know the third-party form was always expected".

"In both of those two meetings, he asked me if vaccines weren't a bad thing", Gates said, adding he advised him dump the idea and embrace science and innovation. He said: 'Trump hears that you don't like what Trump is doing'. However, Gates did go on to say he was not sure if Trump was actually serious about offering him the job or not.

Trump has many times indicated that he sides with the anti-vaccine cause, regularly tweeting about his concerns, bringing up the issue in a Republican primary debate, and even meeting with "anti-vaxxer" heroes such as Andrew Wakefield, the former British gastroenterologist who was struck off the United Kingdom medical register over his fraudulent 1998 research paper that sparked the anti-vaccine debate.

When the president asked him whether he wanted to serve as a "science adviser", Gates simply replied, "That's not a good use of my time".
