Kidnapping Two British citizens have been kidnapped while visiting the Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
Two British tourists are among three people to have been kidnapped in a national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Two British citizens have been kidnapped in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Foreign Office has confirmed.
However, tourism has suffered badly as militant groups and criminal gangs continue to fund a long-running war by pillaging the park's resources.
Five park guards and a driver were killed in an ambush in early April.
"The management of the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature wishes to bring to the attention of the resident of Beni and its surroundings that it is forbidden to fell trees in the park", a statement read. "Three people were kidnapped, including two tourists", park director Emmanuel de Merode said.
Virunga is home to about a quarter of the world's population of critically-endangered mountain gorillas, as well as to eastern lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, okapis, lions, elephants and hippos.

Last year, a fifth of the park's southern sector was deforested owing to illegal charcoal production.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all but essential travel to Goma and urged Britons not to travel beyond the city.
It added that British government staff are not always in the area and the British embassy's ability to offer consular assistance may be "severely limited".
