Buhari praises late military dictator Abacha for building roads

The President, while campaigning as the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in 2011, had said that both President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo have questions to answer, if he was voted into power.

President Muhammadu Buhari has raised questions over the $16 billion allegedly spent on Nigeria's power sector during the administration of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Speaking when he received Buhari Support Organisation, BSO, led by the Comptroller of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali, rtd, the President noted that between 1999 to 2014, when the oil price soared to about $135 and oil production of 2.1 million barrels per day, there was nothing to show for it.

The letter read, "A Parliamentary hearing by the House of Representatives in Abuja over the spending of $16 billion between 1999 and 2007 on the power project revealed through testimonies of witnesses appearing before the Committee that the $16 billion budgeted for the power project may have been stolen by some state officials and others, and can not be accounted for".

Buhari however, spoke good about the former Head of State, late Gen. Sani Abacha, who was accused of stashing billions of Nigerian money in foreign banks, saying he agreed to work with him irrespective of people's perception about the late dictator because during his military regime, a lot of roads and medical facilities were revamped. The destruction, the monumental stealing that we have witnessed, the destruction of our structures and our system, it takes more than eight years to be able to address them and I believe in three years you have done wonderfully well.

"One of the former Heads of State was bragging that he spent more than $15 billion on power in Nigeria".

Beyond accusing the Obasanjo administration, President Buhari criticised other past governments for their failure to effectively manage the nation's economy.

Mr Obasanjo was a key supporter of Mr Buhari in the build-up to the 2015 general election.

"Let anybody come and confront me publicly in the National Assembly. Some of them have been there for 10 years".

Buhari urged Nigerians to reject those bent on dividing the country along religious and ethnic lines, warning that they do not mean well for the country. "We have nothing to regret". Absolutely nothing. God has given Nigeria everything.

Mr Obasanjo has, however, pledged to work against Mr Buhari's re-election in 2019 saying he has performed poorly in office.
