China's first indigenously built aircraft carrier leaves for sea trials
The Navy said in a statement that the trial aims to demonstrate the reliability and capability of the ship's propulsion systems. China reportedly plans to have four aircraft carriers by 2030 to beef up its navy as it asserts its claims in the Indian Ocean and the disputed South China Sea.
It is the country's second aircraft carrier.
The new carrier will be capable of transporting about 40 aircraft, and is reportedly modeled on the first, and now only Chinese aircraft carrier in active service, the Liaoning, a re-purposed Soviet aircraft carrier, put into service in 2012.
China is in the midst of a military modernization program heavily promoted by President Xi Jinping, who has overseen a shift in focus toward creating a more potent fighting force, including projects such as building the second carrier, integrating stealth fighters into its air force and fielding an array of advanced missiles that can strike air and sea targets from long distances.
Few countries in the world have aircraft carriers.
With the induction of INS Vikrant and "Type 001A", both India and China will have two operational aircraft carriers.
Construction on the carrier has been carried out as planned since it was launched in April past year, and equipment debugging, outfitting and mooring tests have been completed to make it ready for the trial mission at sea, the sources said.

The vessel has more than 3,600 cabins.
Officials of the Navy said, several aspects of the new carrier are different from those on the Liaoning.
