Guatemalan President Arrives in Israel to Open Country's Embassy in Jerusalem
On the same day, the Guatemalan president will meet with his Israeli counterpart Reuven Rivlin, the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as compatriots residing in Israel.
Just as Guatemala followed the United States in May 1948 and was the second country to recognize Israel, it became the second state after the USA on Wednesday to open its embassy in Jerusalem. The Embassy move is contentious for Palestinians, who hope to claim part of the city as their future capital, and for many in the Arab world, as it is home to some of the holiest sites in Islam.
The last speaker was President Morales, who described Israel-Guatemala ties as a "love between brothers".
Netanyahu mentioned that there is a Guatemala Street, named in honor of the country's former ambassador to the UN Jorge Garcia Granados.

At the end of his brief speech, Netanyahu promised that his next trip to Latin America would start in Guatemala, though he did not announce concrete travel plans. "I call upon other countries to join the United States and Guatemala - do the right thing and bring your embassies to the Jerusalem, our eternal capital!"
"Jerusalem is Israel's capital, and this is where our embassy should be located", Mr. Zeldin said in a press release.
Some 150 people crammed into the foyer of the embassy, including US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, Sheldon Adelson, Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat and numerous Guatemalan ministers and members of the legislature who came for the event.
Turkey has responded to the violence by asking the Israeli ambassador to leave the country, while also recalling its ambassadors to the US and Israel "for consultations". A high-level American delegation that includes Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin, Senior adviser and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, senior adviser and first daughter Ivanka Trump, and Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt are attending the embassy opening ceremony.
