Trump's embassy opening in Jerusalem is a warm embrace for Israel but a strategic blow for Palestinian hopes
President Donald Trump announced in December past year that the United States would move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and officially recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
None of this takes away from the obvious fact that Jerusalem is, in reality the capital of Israel - home to its parliament, Supreme Court, government ministries and the residences of its president and prime minister.
Ivanka Trump helped declare the new embassy open and a plaque and seal were unveiled before the 800 guests at the ceremony. Two American pastors and a rabbi gave invocations.
"With tensions high and more demonstrations expected in the coming days, it is imperative that everyone show the utmost restraint to avoid further loss of life, including ensuring that all civilians and particularly children are not put in harm's way", said the Deputy UN Spokesperson. He described Trump's move as the "slap of the century", and said the USA could no longer be considered a neutral broker in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks now - or in the future. "Today also demonstrates American leadership". He added the USA had "played the wrong card at the wrong time" by opening the new embassy building.
Israel regards all of the city, including the eastern sector it captured in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed, as its "eternal and indivisible capital". The Trump administration in recent months also has slashed USA aid to the Palestinians and programs that support them.
Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit on Monday blasted as "shameful" countries that are celebrating the opening of the USA embassy in Israel in the disputed holy city of Jerusalem. Attendants handed out pretzels and mineral water.
