Democrats Turn To More Women And First-Timers In Southern Primaries

Abrams, 44, easily won the Democratic nomination in Tuesday's primary, and strong turnout among Democrats has fueled hopes she can take back the governor's mansion in November in a state where Republicans hold every statewide office from US senator to insurance commissioner.

Abrams, who ran a progressive campaign that targeted voters across the state, also secured nominations from national Democratic figures and celebrities alike, including Hillary Clinton, Vermont Sen. While the race was hard-fought, the outcome was lopsided with Abrams winning 423,163 (76.5 percent) votes over Evans' 130,234. Women also are increasingly important party actors on the Democratic side, while that just isn't the case with Republicans. Several hot button issues she has been vocal about include lifting families out of poverty, more money for local businesses and more jobs in the green and energy sectors.

But Abbott hasn't mentioned gun control and Democrats say Texas Republicans - who have a dominating majority in the state Legislature - won't dare cross the National Rifle Association by considering tighter firearm limits.

Republican women? Not so much. Some may still try the old formula: in MS, former congressman and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy, a darling of Clintonian New Democrats, is given some chance to win a special U.S. Senate election with the GOP split between appointed senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and conservative firebrand Chris McDaniel, though there will be a post-November low-turnout runoff that will likely pit Espy against just one Republican. Abrams' Republican opponent will be determined July 24 during a runoff between current Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

Plus, Abrams is trying an unproven strategy in Georgia: To mobilize traditionally hard-to-mobilize black voters rather than reaching out to moderate swing voters.

But the 44-year-old Abrams stood out in her bid to be the nation's first African-American woman to lead a state. Coalescing these disenfranchised citizens - who will soon comprise the majority in America - could be the key to victory.

It is here that Abrams sees an untapped resource of new supporters-people who tend to stay home on election day because they feel abandoned.

"Black women are demanding that the progressive movement show us they respect our leadership and the power of our vote by investing more in black women running for office", she said. Democrats think they can do this by mobilizing some of the 1 million people of color who did not vote in the 2016 presidential election. Her personal story of being one of six children growing up in MS in a working-class family that struggled to make ends meet might even be appealing to a few white conservatives. But Ms. McGrath had a different and plainly more powerful appeal as a political newcomer, and she entered the race with a splashy online video that dramatized her military career and electrified Democratic activists in Kentucky and beyond.

White women are more unpredictable. It is very likely that most white female voters in Georgia will fall in line behind the Republican male candidate. Another 68 percent of Hispanic or Latino female voters also chose Clinton. It worked in Alabama for U.S. Senator Doug Jones.

Black voters can make or break Abrams' victory. A state where progress is more than possible.

No doubt Abrams could win handily if she were able to add the South's largest constituency to her coalition - poor and working-class whites. The populist left had tried to to score more wins after finally bringing the fight to party leaders by defeating their favored candidate in a Nebraska primary last week, but ultimately they came up short this week with Moser losing handily to Lizzie Fletcher, herself a first-time candidate.

Most of the statewide executive branch offices are on the ballot this year, along with one U.S. Senate spot, all 36 U.S. House seats, 16 of the 31 Texas Senate slots and all 150 seats in the Texas House.
