Explosive eruption rocks Hawaii volcano sending ash 30000ft into air

Earthquakes are damaging roads and buildings on Hawaii's Big Island on Wednesday as ash emissions stream from Kilauea volcano. They expect similar and possibly stronger explosions to occur from the summit crater.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park reports that a magnitude-3.5 quake located 0.1 miles beneath the summit of Kīlauea Volcano around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2018, caused noticeable structural damage in park buildings, and left behind a web of earth cracks and uneven road surfaces on Highway 11 and other park roadways.

"We are leaving Highway 11 open at this time, but will close it if it becomes unsafe for motorists", said Chief Ranger John Broward.

Jessica Ferracane, park spokeswoman, said cracks were also seen in areas of the park.

The highway is the main thoroughfare for residents living in Volcano and Kau. "The resulting ash plume will cover the surrounding area".

Hawaii Army National Guard Brig. There was no tsunami alert.

Hawaiian officials are now warning those on the Big Island in the path of the ash plume to seek shelter as the ash above Kilauea moves southeast with the wind.

Housing Starts Drop 3.7% in April
These constraints have left builders unable to plug an acute shortage of houses on the market, restraining home sales growth. But multi-unit dwellings plunged 12.6 percent to 374,000 units, offsetting nearly all of the March increase.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says there are occasional bursts of ash coming from the crater.

The Kilauea volcano erupted from its summit on Thursday morning, spewing an ash plume that could reach 25,000 feet above the island of Hawaii.

The explosion probably lasted only a few minutes, and the ash accumulations were minimal, with only trace amounts expected near the volcano, said Mike Poland, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

An ash plume rising up to two miles (more than 3,000m) prompted officials to warn pilots to avoid the area.

Instead, they will operate from a backup command center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

During a flight earlier by the Civil Air Patrol, the height of the ash plumes near the crater rose to more than 3 km above sea level, and downwind the plumes continued to rise to about 3.5 km above sea level.

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and an eruption in 1924 killed one person and sent rock and ash into the air for more than two weeks.
