Fizdale on challenge of coaching Knicks: 'I've never been afraid'
David Fizdale was officially introduced as the head coach of the New York Knicks Tuesday morning and a few of last season's Knicks came to Madison Square Garden to support him.
Porzingis has had his share of issues with the Knicks, but he anticipates being a fresh start for the talented big man.
"I can't talk about none of that stuff, " Fizdale said when asked directly by Kay if he will get James in a Knicks uniform. "They just know I'm a heckuva guy and a good coach". He believes this opportunity in NY is different because the club is trying to establish an identity; Memphis had already established a culture when Fizdale arrived.
He was sacked after a 7-12 start to the 2017-18 season and a clash with star center Marc Gasol, but Fizdale might be the best coach for the Knicks and star Kristaps Porzingis in terms of his style of play and his reputation as a players' coach. All I'm talking about is these guys right now.
"(Free agents) are not just going to go there to live in New York City, " Fizdale said. So why did he choose the New York Knicks?
"I'm so sad he's hurt, " Fizdale said.

Fizdale said that his most important task in the immediate future is to build a connection with his players off the court.
The Knicks president revealed that together with general manager Scott Perry, they had interviewed over ten candidates before finally settling on Fidzale.
The Knicks announced the hiring Monday after agreeing to terms with the former Memphis Grizzlies coach last week.
Ultimately, a clash with star player Marc Gasol led to his dismissal in Memphis but he is generally regarded as a players' coach. "And just for whatever reason we bumped heads on some things", he said.
That plan likely won't include Porzingis anytime soon, however. I've got to connect with these guys, get to know them with their families in their space. "Obviously, I don't know him personally yet, but he fits all the qualities of a megastar who can propel a franchise forward".
Porzingis is in Latvia rehabbing his ACL injury and is expected to be sidelined until at least December. Riley has had success throughout his career as a coach and an executive. The franchise is hopeful that Fizdale will have more staying power than Porzingis' previous coaches. He reiterated that owner James Dolan is on board with taking a patient approach to team-building.
