Mahathir has barred Najib from leaving the country pending investigations.

Mr Anwar left the Cheras rehabilitation hospital in Kuala Lumpur where he was temporarily serving his sentence after an operation on his shoulder, on Wednesday at 11.30am local time (3.30am BST).

But Anwar's big heart today answered all the concerns by forgiving and burying hostilities and forgiving Dr Mahathir over what had transpired besides placing the interest of the people and helping the country's agenda of change and not rushing back to the country's political cauldron. Anwar's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, is now the Deputy Prime Minister.

Anwar told reporters he needed "time and space" to recuperate and be with his family, and shared that he has been booked for speaking engagements overseas. He reiterated his full support for Mahathir's leadership and said their political feud has always been buried.

Acting Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Susan Thornton last July met with Anwar's wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

Mahathir, 92, has promised to hand over the premiership to Anwar within a year or two.

"In this new Malaysia, I hope the authorities will conduct their investigation professionally and fairly in accordance with the laws of the country, and act freely without being subservient or pressured by anyone".

Far from just being an ideal situation, this is the new reality of Malaysian politics where an old experienced leader has teamed up with a multipolar minded and multiracial minded party to help form the core of a new political programme for all Malaysians.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission laid out in recent days a comprehensive list detailing the potential scope of investigations into 1MDB, according to people who have seen the document.

Upon his release in 2004, he joined and revitalised the opposition coalition that finally ousted BN last week.

Malaysians who care for a reconstructed and more resilient Malaysia are praying hard that both Mahathir and Anwar have grown wiser in the wilderness and that their return and reunion will usher in a golden era.

Mahathir has said he expects to run the government for one to two years but has signaled that the reins would be turned over to Anwar eventually.

Malaysian police spent hours early Thursday searching former Prime Minister Najib Razak's house, reportedly part of a money-laundering investigation linked to a state investment fund that is being investigated overseas. "It's a very old safe. this type will take longer time because of anti-drill features", he said.

Anwar indicated that he had no immediate plans to get deeply involved in politics, but would support Mahathir's governing efforts as a "private citizen".

But voters resoundingly rejected the government of scandal-tainted Najib Razak and voted in an opposition alliance, triggering a series of dizzying developments - with Anwar's release perhaps the most dramatic yet. Mahathir was premier for 22 years until 2003 but made a political comeback amid anger over the 1MDB scandal.
