Polish author Olga Tokarczuk wins 2018 Man Booker International Prize for ‘Flights
The prize is a counterpart to the Man Booker Prize and is open to books in any language that have been translated into English. Still, the 56-year-old author counts among Poland's top writers.
Her novel is a combination of tales of modern day travel with the story of a 17 century anatomist who performed dissection on his amputated leg.
Olga Tokarczuk, one of Poland's best-known authors has written eight novels and two short story collections.
She also praised the novel's translation by Croft, an American who translates from Polish, Spanish and Ukrainian.
"Flights" has been translated by Jennifer Croft and is published by Fitzcarraldo Editions, a tiny independent press.

Tokarczuk has more recently made headlines for her criticism of Poland's right-wing government and the country's anti-Semitic history, garnering her death threats and animosity among nationalists and conservatives. Her other work "Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead" was denounced by a Polish news agency as "a deeply anti-Christian [work] that promoted eco-terrorism". She was branded a "targowiczanin" - an ancient term for a traitor - and her publisher had to hire bodyguards for a while to protect her, The Guardian reported. "I was very naive". Poet and translator Michael Hofmann; novelists Hari Kunzru and Helen Oyeyemi and journalist Tim Martin, along with Appignanesi completed the judging panel.

Last year's prize was awarded to Israeli author David Grossman for his novel, A Horse Walks Into A Bar, translated by Jessica Cohen.
Tokarczuk and Croft were presented with their awards on Tuesday night at a ceremony in London's Victoria and Albert Museum.
