The striker scored 27 goals before suffering the ankle problem.

Romelu Lukaku (ankle) and Marouane Fellaini (muscle) will miss out but the Belgium global duo will be pushing to be fit for the FA Cup final.

Mourinho has been rotating his squad to give the players a chance to force their way in to his plans for the FA Cup final and that will continue for their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday.

The pair were on the bench for Thursday's goalless draw at West Ham as Mourinho made eight changes - with the United boss set to shuffle his pack once again against the Hornets.

United fans tweeted during the game that they missed Romelu Lukaku, who was absent through injury, but Martial and Rashford could also have filled in up front.

The Belgium global sustained an ankle injury in late April during United's 2-1 win over Arsenal.

"He is in Belgium, having his treatment with communication between the doctors in Belgium and our medical department".

'We hope he can play the final, ' Mourinho said.

'If not starting at least he can be on the bench'.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick will captain United on Sunday to mark the England midfielder's final appearance before joining Mourinho's backroom staff.

"Carrick had already been decided", the Portuguese added.

"He's going to start the match as a captain and he's not going to end the match because I want him to leave the pitch alone and I want him to feel what the United supporters feel in relation to him".

Relayed by DH, he said: "I knew I was going to play".

United started with Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard up front and it's fair to say the two attacking midfielders didn't slot in perfectly in that position.
