An global team of investigators says the Russian military was the source of the missile that downed Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in 2014.

An global investigation concluded yesterday that the missile that shot down Malaysia Airlines flight 17 was sacked by a Russian anti-aircraft brigade.

Ukrainian Army General Vasyl Hrytsak, a member of the investigation team, told Reuters it would be crucial to pinpoint who issued the orders to move the missile system.

The Boeing 777 was blown up as it flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, killing all 298 passengers on board, including 193 Dutch citizens.

The JIT determined in 2016 that MH17 was shot down from separatist-held territory in the Donetsk region by a Buk antiaircraft system provided by the Russian military.

He said investigators were not yet ready to identify individual suspects publicly or to issue indictments, but that when they do he expects cooperation, or a firm global political response.

Wilbert Paulissen, head of the crime squad of the Netherlands' national police, said the missile had been fired from a carrier belonging to Russia's 53rd Anti-Aircraft Brigade. Ukrainian separatists might have operated it. Mr. Paulissen said the pool of suspects had been narrowed to a few dozen people.

Russian Federation denies interfering in Ukraine's internal affairs, despite compelling evidence that Moscow has provided military, economic, and political support to separatists fighting against Kiev.

The ministry accused Ukraine of being behind the disaster in which 298 people died, saying it had presented evidence that "showed the involvement of Ukrainian units using (Soviet-designed) BUK missiles". There was no immediate comment from Moscow on the investigative development.

Australia's Foreign Affairs also said the country would pursue justice for the victims of the crash.

Two years ago investigators said they believed the BUK missile system involved had crossed the border into eastern Ukraine from Russian Federation, returning after the plane was shot down.

The team called on the public, including friends and families of the members of Russia's 53rd brigade, to assist in their inquiries into the incident and come forward with details about the crew operating the missile system.

"It is clear that these gratuitous accusations are an attempt to discredit our nation in the eyes of the global community", the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

It said it had "irrefutable evidence" that the missile had been brought in from Russian territory and fired from a field controlled by pro-Russian fighters.
