Cuba declared an official period of mourning from 6 a.m on May 19 to 12 p.m on May 20, during which the flag would be flown at half-mast outside state and military institutions.

There was no other official mention of survivors from a almost 40-year-old Boeing 737 operated by Cubana de Aviacion, which crashed into a field close to a wooded area near Havana's Jose Marti airport, sending a thick column of acrid smoke into the air. State media reports stopped short of openly declaring that the rest on board were dead, but there was no word of other survivors by Friday night. Most of the passengers were Cuban, with five foreigners, including two Argentines, among them.

Her 60-year-old grandmother was among the dead, and she was waiting with other relatives of the deceased at a Havana hotel for an update from the authorities.

The airport in Havana, which is located nine miles southwest of the capital, welcomes almost six million passengers each year.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel has visited the morgue where the victims are being identified.

A Boeing 737 domestic passenger plane, ferrying 114 passengers including five children and nine crew members from Havana to Holguin, came down shortly after takeoff.

A Cuban-operated airliner with at least 110 people aboard crashed and burned in a cassava field just after takeoff from the Havana airport yesterday.

Argentina's Foreign Ministry says two of the South American nation's citizens died in Friday's crash of a passenger jet in Cuba.

The lights in the airport suddenly went out, he said, and he was told a plane had crashed.

What do we know about the plane?

Aviation authorities in Guyana previous year stopped the same aircraft from conducting charter flights because of serious safety concerns, including fears about excessive baggage overloading and other issues.

Built in 1979, the plane was leased from a small Mexican company, Global Air, also known as Aerolineas Damoj.

Cubana has withdrawn many of its own planes from service in recent months because of mechanical problems.
