Secretary of State Mike Pompeo demanded that Iran halt all uranium enrichment, stop its ballistic-missile program and give nuclear inspectors access to the entire country, in a speech detailing the US approach now that President Donald Trump has withdrawn from the 2015 nuclear deal.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's speech on Monday detailing US demands on Iran in the wake of the USA exiting the nuclear deal was met with formidable opposition among European allies, who worry renewed sanctions could harm European businesses.
Pompeo said Iran will continue to feel the "sting of sanctions" if its doesn't change the "unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen". Afterward, he was asked what the U.S. time line would be for its new strategy.
Yet the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA is unlikely to trigger any change in Iran that would be beneficial to Washington.
Germany's economy minister says the government will help firms maintain business with Iran where it can after the USA decision to reimpose sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
Rouhani scoffed at the demands from Pompeo, a former congressman who was previously Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director.
Germany's government will help German firms with business in Iran where it can, but cannot entirely shield them from the US decision to quit the Iran nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions against Tehran, the economy minister told a newspaper.
"Who are you to decide for Iran and the world?"
Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeted, "US diplomacy sham is merely a regression to old habits: imprisoned by delusions & failed policies-dictated by corrupt Special Interest-it repeats the same wrong choices and will thus reap the same ill rewards".

Pompeo's threat to "crush" Iran with sanctions has sparked widespread fears, particularly among anyone with a business linked to the outside world. In the eyes of Europeans, the multilateral sanctions that brought Iran to the table to negotiate the 2015 deal are viewed as far more effective than any potential sanctions imposed by the USA unilaterally.
Pompeo said Monday that Washington would impose new penalties if Tehran did not make sweeping changes, including dropping its nuclear program and pulling out of the Syrian civil war.
John Bolton, the US national security advisor, has been a supporter of the MKO, which the Iranian government sees as a terrorist group. Their governments could continue their agreement with Iran, but risk running afoul of USA sanctions. He said Iran should simply "allow for this era of extremism to end". "The Iranian regime should know this is just the beginning". "But not its actions which jeopardize the world's citizens".
He warned that after Washington's exit from the Iran nuclear deal, "the prospect of a new jumbo Iran treaty is going to be very, very hard". The 2015 deal concluded under the Obama administration dealt only with the nuclear programme and was not a treaty but rather a UN-endorsed executive agreement between the parties. Instead, Trump wants North Korea to give up everything first.
These essentially address every aspect of Iran's missile program and what the United States calls its "malign influence" across the region, including support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Hezbollah and Huthi rebels in Yemen.
The current Iranian regime is unlikely to accede, which means that pressure from sanctions will keep mounting, which in turn may lead to street protests and wider unrest.
He also called Iran "the largest sponsor of terror" and "a sanctuary for al-Qaeda", in another echo of the Iraq playbook.
The NCRI's main constituent group, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) is widely credited with the on-the-ground organization of the continuing protests, a key element in their potential to bring about real change. Given the growth of the democratic opposition movement, the continued protests, and the very shaky foundation of the regime, it is wise for the Western world to stand on the side of the Iranian people as they are standing for their freedom.
