Trump welcomes Americans home

The United States and its worldwide partners are ready to provide North Korea with assurances if its leader Kim Jong-un is prepared to fully denuclearise the Korean Peninsula, a top American diplomat said on Friday.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dangled the prospect of a far brighter future for North Korea if leader Kim Jong Un abandons his nation's nuclear weapons program after a summit with President Donald Trump in Singapore next month.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, left, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrive for press conference at the State Department, May 11, 2018, in Washington.

Trump on Friday announced that he will meet Kim on June 12 in Singapore, the first-ever summit between the top leaders of the two Cold War rivals to discuss the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

He described his conversations with Kim as "warm" and said both had tried "our best to make sure that we were communicating clearly and had shared understanding about what our mutual objectives were".

Recently, North Korea has made a decision to return three American citizens of Korean origin earlier convicted for espionage and hostile actions to the United States.

That war ended with an armistice agreement signed on July 27, 1953 by the USA -led United Nations Command, North Korea and China.

Pompeo gave a toast at a luncheon in North Korea hosted by senior official Kim Yong Chol, calling the man a great partner in making the summit a success. North Korea is expected to demand some form of relief nearly immediately.

The two sides initially considered meeting in the Panmunjom truce village straddling the Korean military border, the scene of the third inter-Korea summit attended by Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in last month, the official said.

Amazon to open cashier-less stores in Chicago and San Francisco
There are no cashiers but there are plenty of human employees restocking shelves, checking ID for wines, and working security. It is recently reported that Amazon had its eye on an Amazon Go location in San Francisco's Union Square neighborhood.

"We're very clear that the sanctions remain in place until and unless we see visible meaningful action taken by North Korea on the denuclearization track".

"The release of these three citizens helps set the conditions for a successful meeting between President Trump and Chairman Kim".

Stangarone said that the core of the agenda will focus on the elimination of the DPRK's weapons of mass destruction, the normalization of relations, and the removal of sanctions on the DPRK.

"I hope the United States also will be happy with our success", Kim said, adding: "I have high expectations the U.S. will play a very big role in establishing peace on the Korean peninsula".

"What Kim Jong Un has said publicly and in discussions is that he is prepared to negotiate to achieve complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", he said.

"North Korea has a very extensive program".

Meantime, Kim has already milked huge benefits from Trump's agreement to meet him which gives him recognition as a major global player.

But at different points, he also appeared to suggest that a deal might come up shy of making North Korea get rid of all of its current nukes.

China has been keen to show it has an indispensable role in seeking a lasting solution to tension over North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons- concerned that its interests may be ignored, especially as North Korea and the United States establish contacts.
