The conflict in Syria has taken an enormous scale and can not be settled without the participation of Russia, Turkey, Iran, Europe and other regional powers, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.

Speaking during ongoing budgetary consultations in the federal parliament (Bundestag), Merkel hit back at opposition criticism of a scheduled rise in military funding from 38.5 billion euros (45.5 billion US dollars) in 2018 to 41.5 billion euros in 2019.

"The question is whether you can talk better if you terminate an agreement or if you stay in it ... we say you can talk better if you remain in it".

"This agreement is anything but ideal", she told lawmakers, but noted that the United Nations nuclear watchdog has confirmed Iran is abiding by its terms.

Trump last week announced he planned to reimpose an array of sanctions lifted by the accord, and the US Treasury on Tuesday imposed sanctions on Iran's central bank governor, three other individuals and an Iraq-based bank.

"That's why we, Britain, France, Germany but also the members of the European Union, believe it's not right to cancel this agreement in this situation now", said Merkel, adding that concerns about Iran's ballistic missile program and its destabilizing influence in the region could best be discussed with Tehran by preserving the deal.

Merkel said the Europeans aren't "blind" to threats posed by Iran's activities in Syria to Israel, for example.

The Europeans and Iranians have tasked experts to come up with measures quickly and will meet again in Vienna next week.
