A Cuban state airways plane with 110 passengers and crew on board crashed shortly after taking off from Havana on Friday, killing all but three people on board in a mass of twisted and smoldering fuselage.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel said an investigation was under way into Friday's crash of the almost 40-year-old Boeing 737, leased to the national carrier Cubana de Aviacion by a Mexican company.

It was carrying 107 passengers - mostly Cubans and also five foreigners - and a six-person flight crew from Mexico.

They are receiving treatment at Havana's Calixto Garcia Hospital, and according to the facility's director, Carlos Alberto Martinez, the women had been significantly hurt in the crash.
