Some analysts have begun to predict a full-out war between Israel and Iran, to occur in Syria. For years, Iranian proxies have attacked Israel, but this time, Israel is directly blaming Iran for the attack. Iran has vowed to retaliate.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that Israel would be victorious in its "ongoing campaign" against Iran. It said half of the missiles were shot down.
Russian Federation - which is alone in having close relations with both Iran and Israel - has sought to position itself as a mediator to prevent further escalation.
"Iran had to make a point: that it can respond, even if it's a weak response", said Joshua M. Landis, a Syria expert and director of the Center of Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. "I hope we've finished this episode and everyone understood".
"We hit almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria", said Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
In total, 42 people, including 19 Iranians, were killed over two days of strikes - from Tuesday to Thursday - according to the Observatory.
It wasn't immediately clear if any Iranians were killed. The report did not say whether the foreigners included Iranians. "There are no injuries and no damage was caused to IDF positions", Manelis said, referring to the name Israel has given its missile interceptor system.
Missile fire is seen from Damascus, Syria. The incoming attack set off air raid sirens in the Israeli-controlled Golan, which was captured from Syria in the 1967 war.
The global community has never recognized the annexation and regards the Golan Heights as Israeli-occupied territory. Syrian activists said the onslaught lasted more than five hours.
The White House condemned the missile attack on Israel, saying in a statement that it strongly supported "Israel's right to act in self-defense" and called on Iran "to take no further provocative steps". Since 2013, Tehran has deployed thousands of troops and government-backed militiamen in Syria - a key strategic ally - ostensibly to aid President Bashar al-Assad in his struggle against Sunni militias, Kurdish nationalist groups and Islamic State. "That is what we have done and that is what we will continue doing", Netanyahu said.

"Should there be another Iranian attack, we will be prepared for it", he said.
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri says this time the Syrian retaliation was in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights but next time it will be in Israel proper.
Iran's ability to hit back could be limited. "Otherwise, this situation can negatively affect the peace process in Syria, the Astana talks and the state of affairs in the region on the whole", he concluded.
Earlier this week, Syrian state media said Israel struck a military outpost near Damascus.
Speaking on a tour of the Golan Heights, the minister, Avigdor Lieberman, told Assad to beware especially of Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Quds Force, the branch of its Revolutionary Guards that oversees operations outside Iran's borders.
If America's withdrawal from the nuclear deal provokes Iran to expand its nuclear program once more, the risk of Israeli or American attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities will start growing, as it did between 2011 and 2013.
