Mr Trump said he had been "very much looking forward" to meeting Mr Kim.
Cheshire said: "By bringing South Korea and China to the table a bit more, maybe they can even get that (economic) development from them instead of the United States". A self-professed master negotiator, Trump could envision Nobel laurels in the offing of the unprecedented one-on-one meeting.
He urged Trump and Kim to talk directly. The tone of Trump's letter is civil and diplomatic.
Earlier in a tweet, the president welcomed North Korea's response to the cancellation of the meeting.
He dictated a letter to Kim that at times felt like a wistful plea for what might have been. "It's unfortunate because, as you said, you want to be optimistic, you want to be hopeful that something can come of something".
Cheshire said Mr Kim was reportedly "unruffled" and the North Koreans had responded to Mr Trump's move with "equanimity".
"Democrats are so obviously rooting against us in our negotiations with North Korea", he said, also accusing Democrats of supporting "MS-13 thugs", and wanting to raise taxes.
For the moment, at least, they seem to be regretting that misstep. It often doesn't get mentioned but Donald Trump actually blames China for some of this impasse. First, Kim's government backed out of planned peace talks with South Korea, citing joint U.S. Just last week, Pyongyang abruptly cut off high-level contact with Seoul over an ongoing round of military exercises with USA troops and then refused until the last minute to allow South Korean journalists onto a pre-arranged media trip to observe the closing of its nuclear test site, which took place on Thursday.
Russian president Vladimir Putin, an ally of North Korea, said Mr Kim had in fact done "everything that he had promised in advance, even blowing up the tunnels and shafts" of his country's nuclear testing site.
In fact, they weren't hearing anything.
This directly prompted Trump to say that it is "inappropriate" to go ahead with the summit because of the "tremendous anger and open hostility" displayed in the North's "most recent statement".

Partisan Lawmakers Get Classified Russia Probe Briefings
Both men left the rooms after initial remarks, according to two officials familiar with the meeting. Lawmakers remained uncertain Thursday morning about what material would be shared.
Trump's decision came after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out of the summit over what it saw as confrontational remarks by USA officials.
As Trump pulled out of talks scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, the White House blamed North Korea's ramped-up nuclear rhetoric and unwillingness to meet for pre-summit planning.
After that, a senior White House official said the North had reneged on its promises ahead of the summit.
Meanwhile, South Koreans said they had not been informed about the United States decision to pull, with Seoul officials having said just days earlier that there was a "99.9%" chance of the meeting going ahead as planned.
In recent months, Trump had traded his bellicose threats of "fire and fury" for bouquets of flattery, calling Kim "very honorable" and exuding confidence that he could seal a deal that had eluded his predecessors for generations.
Trump also appears to still want the summit to go through at some point.
Trump believed that bringing detente to the Korean Peninsula could bolster his approval ratings, help inoculate him against the investigations swirling around him and maybe even trickle down to help Republicans in the midterm elections.
Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea.
Trump aides had warned the president that agreeing to a sit-down with Kim was in itself a concession to the leader of an oppressive government that has longed for worldwide recognition. And likewise, they stressed to Trump that pulling out could undercut American assertions that it seeks a peaceful solution to the nuclear crisis.
In 2003, North Korea's state media called Bolton "human scum" after he described then-North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, the late father of Kim Jong Un, as a "tyrannical dictator".
