Reporters from China, Russia, the United States, Britain and South Korea would be allowed to cover the event on site to show it "in a transparent manner".

It also said North Korea will provide all global journalists with charter flights from Beijing to North Korea's Wonsan, and from there, they will be offered a special charter train to Pyunggye-ri.

North Korea's six known nuclear tests have taken place in Punggye-ri, a location in the northeastern part of North Korea where a system of tunnels have been dug under Mount Mantap, Reuters reported.

The North Korean leader revealed during the summit that his country plans to publicly close the test site, announcing experts and journalists from foreign countries will be invited. But South Korean officials argue that Mr. Kim is willing to bargain away his nuclear weapons in return for ending hostilities and getting Washington's help to improve his country's economy.

The news follows North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's historic meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in earlier this month, which saw the two agree on progress towards a denuclearized peninsula.

North Korea details plans to dismantle nuclear test site this month
Situated in mountainous terrain in the north-east, the Punggye-ri site is thought to be the North's main nuclear facility. The country's central news agency said it would blow up all the tunnels on the nuclear test ground.

North Korea announced at a ruling party meeting last month that it was suspending all tests of nuclear devices and ICBMs, as well as the plan to close the nuclear testing ground. But when he met with Mr. Moon last month, Mr. Kim rebuffed the skeptics, saying that the test site still had two tunnels where nuclear tests could be conducted.

North Korea's reference to such activity is created to communicate that even without underground testing, the country intends to maintain its nuclear arsenal and be a "responsible" steward of those weapons at the same time, said Andrea Berger, a senior analyst at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies.

Pompeo said there would need to be "complete" and "verifiable" denuclearization that would remove North Korea as a threat to the South, the United States and the rest of the world.

Kim also offered to make the dismantling public.

In June 2008, global broadcasters were allowed to air the demolishing of a cooling tower at a reactor site, after the north agreed to disable its nuclear facilities in return for an aid package worth about £300 million. "North Korea's nuclear test center will be discarded in order to ensure the transparency of the suspension of the nuclear test".
