"North Korea summit. For me, it feels like North Korea is more of a normal country, saying it would give the US time and wait", said Yun Hae-ri, a 25-year-old office worker.

North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said in a statement released by the North's central news agency (KCNA) that his country remains open to resolving problems with the United States "whenever and however", and offered praise for President Trump's diplomatic engagement efforts.

USA president Donald Trump called-off the much-anticipated summit between him and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Thursday citing "anger and open hostility".

The White House viewed North Korea's objection to the latest US-South Korean joint military exercise - and its recent cancellation of a meeting with the South Koreans - as a breach of its commitments leading up to the summit.

Choe Son-hui had said the suggestions from US Vice-President Mike Pence that North Korea "may end like Libya" was "stupid".

North Korea sent hundreds of athletes, performers and dignitaries to the Pyeongchang Games, including Kim's sister, who conveyed her brother's desire for a summit with Moon.

The plan followed months of war threats and insults traded between the leaders, as well as advances in North Korean missiles capable of reaching the United States.

Trump's announcement came after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out of the summit over what it saw as confrontational remarks by USA officials. But during the nine hours we were led around the grounds, North Korean officials stressed that two of the tunnels were still operational and that destroying them is a real concession.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who worked hard to help set up the summit and urged Trump at a White House meeting on Tuesday not to let a rare opportunity slip away, said he was "perplexed" by the cancellation. "But we shouldn't spend all our time thinking about the deal, without focusing on here's what this needs to look like in order to what president has said, to keep Americans safe from the threat that North Korea presents today", Pompeo added.

Others point to the diminished bargaining position the US has been left in.

On Friday, Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said South Korea would continue to strive to fulfill the peace building goals of that summit, and said he believes North Korea also remains committed to finding a peaceful solution to the nuclear standoff.

"It appears that (the North) remains honest in implementing the agreement and making efforts on denuclearization and peace building", the unification minister said.

North Korea says that, unlike Libya, it is a fully fledged nuclear state.

Analysts have decried the pace of events over the last few months, pointing out that the diplomatically untested businessman-president appeared to have little understanding of the complexities of dealing with North Korea.

Trump didn't entirely kill the summit, writing to Kim "please do not hesitate to call me or write".

March 27: Kim makes a surprise visit to Beijing for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in an apparent move to strengthen his leverage ahead of his negotiations with Trump.

Almost all North Korean trade goes through China, and there have been observational reports of increased trade along the border region, although Beijing denies it has eased sanctions restrictions.

However it would not be surprising for Beijing to allow increased informal trade with Pyongyang, given Kim's improved relationship with Xi, and the unilateral good faith measures taken by the North that include the destruction of it nuclear test site on Thursday, the release of USA prisoners, and the continued suspension of further nuclear and missile tests.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the USA and North Korea should not give up, saying "nerves of steel" were required.

The Independent's Samuel Osborne and Andrew Buncombe remark that through this historic meeting "Trump, a natural showman, wanted to pull off something no other U.S. president had done; no sitting U.S. president has met with either of the three members of the Kim dynasty that have ruled North Korea since its creation in 1948".
