Portugal coach Fernando Santos announced the team he is ready to take for the 2018 World Cup on Thursday and notably, the squad will be missing almost half of the Euro Cup winners.

Santos has left out almost half the 2016 European Championship winning squad.

Centre forward Eder, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2016 final against France, was among 10 players from that squad omitted from Santos's list.

Also missing from the 23-man squad were Barcelona duo Andre Gomes, Nelson Semedo, and Renato Sanches who, like Eder and Nani, played at the 2016 European championships won by the Portuguese.

"All of them helped us write a brilliant page in the history of Portuguese football".
