White House national security adviser John Bolton said USA sanctions on European companies that maintain business dealings with Iran were "possible", while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he remained hopeful Washington and its allies could strike a new nuclear deal with Tehran.
White House National Security adviser John Bolton said it was possible European companies that continue to do business with Iran were at the risk of facing sanctions from the United States.
The Government's position, in common with its European Union partners, remains that the 2015 deal remains in operation and that former EU and United Nations sanctions on Iran, which had been suspended under the agreement, are not being reinstated.
With withdrawal from the JCPOA, the US has re-imposed the highest level of economic sanctions on Iran.
Bolton expressed optimism that European allies will follow Trump's lead and exit the deal, despite the assertions of the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, and Germany that they intend to remain in the agreement.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, speaking in Dublin, declared: "We are stakeholders" and will remain so.
Germany said it will spend the next few months trying to persuade Washington to change its mind.
Trump's tough talk now on sanctions is at odds with what he told France's Emmanuel Macon and May just six months ago as he moved toward yanking the US out of the deal.
When pressed by CNN on whether the administration would sanction European firms that continue to do business with Iran, Bolton said, "I think the Europeans will see that it's in their interest ultimately to come along with us".

Trump weighed in later Sunday, saying his decision would limit Iran's regional ambitions. Macron told Trump in their telephone call on Saturday that he was anxious about stability in the Middle East, according to Macron's office.
As a private citizen, Bolton in the past has suggested that the United States push for a change in government in Iran.
We all share the common objective of making sure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, are anxious about their terribly destabilising and threatening military behaviour across the region and their ballistic missile program.
In the CNN interview, Bolton did not respond directly when asked whether Trump might seek "regime change" in Iran, or whether the U.S. military would be ordered to make a pre-emptive strike against any Iranian nuclear facility. With Pompeo seemingly assuming the "good cop" role on behalf of the Trump administration, it was left to newly appointed USA national security advisor John Bolton to remind Europe its firms could be punished if they didn't adhere to American measures.
