Didi Chuxing suspends ride-hitch service after passenger murder
Didi is the largest ride-hailing firm in the world by the number of rides.
A police statement said the driver was suspected of killing the woman and he later jumped into a river after abandoning his auto. Police have yet to find any trace of the man.
According to the Paper (in Chinese), Liu picked up the victim, Li Mingzhu 李明珠, a 21-year-old flight attendant from Shandong Province, around 11:50 p.m. on Saturday from a hotel adjacent to the local airport, and headed to the city's downtown area. The woman surnamed Li told her colleagues via WeChat soon after she entered the auto that the driver said she was lovely and wanted to kiss her. Li, however, declined her colleagues' advice of getting off.
"[The person] said I look rather pretty and wanted to kiss me", she was quoted as saying in the message. "Luckily, I'm not sitting in the front seat".
Her colleague then called her, but the woman told her on the phone she was fine, according to the report. Her body was found on a muddy slope on Tuesday.
Didi later issued a statement in which it offered condolences to the family and said it felt culpable for the tragedy. "We have an inescapable responsibility for the incident", said Didi in an online statement.

Didi itself today announced (in Chinese) a reward of up to 1 million yuan ($157,500) for important tips about the case.
It also said police were looking for the person suspected to have killed the woman and it would work closely with law enforcement authorities.
The killing has sparked heated debate on China's active social media, fast becoming the most talked about topic on microblog platform Weibo with many expressing safety fears.
Police in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, are searching for a Didi driver named Liu Zhenhua 刘镇华, who abandoned his vehicle and jumped into a river after allegedly raping and murdering a female passenger on May 6.
