BREAKING: Senate confirms Gina Haspel as CIA director

Haspel was confirmed in a 54-45 vote, the culmination of a roller-coaster nomination that appeared to be in danger at several points after she was abruptly selected by President Donald Trump in March.

Harris and four other Democrats voted against her.

Republican Senator John McCain, who has been away from Washington all year as he battles brain cancer, urged the Senate not to vote for Haspel. He says Human Rights First is putting Haspel on notice that Congress and the American people will hold her to her pledge to never reinstate such a program in the future.

"For the first time in the history of the United States, the Central Intelligence Agency will be led by someone with a past role in the use of torture", Christopher Anders, deputy director of ACLU's legislative office, said in a statement.

In 2002, following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, Haspel was in charge of a covert detention center in Thailand, where the agency conducted interrogations at a secret prison using methods including waterboarding.

McCaskill's vote against Haspel drew immediate criticism from her main Republican opponent in her tough race for re-election in a state that President Donald Trump carried easily in 2016. However, she stopped short of calling the torture program "immoral" when pressed to do so by Democrats.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said in a floor speech that Haspel "offered up nearly the classic Washington nonapology".

"No matter how you dress it up, torture is torture", Warren said.

The Missouri Democrat said she agreed with Sen.

Haspel had already picked up Democratic support and appears on a path to confirmation.

Number two Senate Republican John Cornyn said Haspel is well-liked within the CIA, and will provide "objective, unbiased, and unvarnished intelligence" to the president and policymakers. "I look forward to (Haspel's) performance convincing those who could not support her today that her long-term value to our country will make our country safer and that she will act in accordance to the principles and values of our country". Her Republican challengers, state Sen. As acting director of the agency, Haspel was able to decide what documents should be made public.

The Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday had recommended Haspel be confirmed as CIA director.

Democrats who backed Haspel pointed to her 33-year CIA career, 32 years of which was spent undercover, as well as her broad support from former intelligence officials, including many senior Obama administration officials.
