Iraqis vote in 1st election since Daesh defeat

Iraqi President Fuad Masum, center, casts his vote in the country's parliamentary elections in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, Iraq, Saturday, May 12, 2018.

MOSUL, Iraq-Iraqis voted this weekend in their lowest numbers since the country became a democracy, reflecting growing political disenchantment even after Islamic State's defeat rallied the country together.

The rankings could still change, with final results to be announced in a few days.

Iraqis voted for rival lists of candidates. Among them was Nineveh, with the second-highest number of seats being contested. The results unexpectedly showed former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who was touted as a serious challenger to Abadi, lagging behind.

The prime minister post is reserved for a Shi'a, the parliamentary speaker is Sunni, and the ceremonial presidency has gone to a Kurd. If parliament chooses him as prime minister, Abadi will remain under pressure to maintain that balancing act amid tensions between Washington and Tehran over the nuclear accord.

Sadr, an anti-American firebrand with a large following among Baghdad's urban poor, was once leader of the Mahdi Army, which battled USA forces in 2003. In the years after 2003 invasion of Iraq, Sadr and the militia he controlled became a major thorn in the side of USA military, waging a brutal and costly insurgency against coalition troops.

His father, highly respected Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr, was murdered in 1999 for defying Saddam Hussein.

If the Sadr list finished second, that would mark a surprise comeback by the cleric. The dissident-turned-militia leader spent more than two decades fighting Saddam from exile in Iran.

The US-led coalition that helped battle IS pledged Sunday to work with the elected government to ensure the "lasting defeat" of IS and said the poll proved Iraqis "emphatically rejected violent extremism". Victory for Amiri would be seen as a big a win for Iran, which has sought to increase its influence in Iraq and the wider region.

Turnout was 44.52 percent with 92 percent of votes counted, the Independent High Electoral Commission said - that was significantly lower than in previous elections. Some 22.5 million people were eligible to vote.
