Bangladesh blasted its way into the space age Friday after US company SpaceX launched Dhaka's Bangabandhu-1 satellite into orbit, in a social-media event described by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as a "glorious day" for the South Asian country.
In September 2016, Bangladesh signed a 14 billion taka ($180 million) loan agreement with Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) to finance the country's first-ever satellite. "With launching of Bangabandhu Satellite-1, we are hoisting our national flag in the space".
"The Bangabandhu satellite will help to make Bangladesh an advanced country", Shahjahan Mahmood, chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, which will manage the satellite, told the Dhaka Tribune.
The satellite will be controlled from Joydebpur in Gazipur, near the capital, and another ground station in Rangamati Betbunia, in south-eastern Bangladesh, will be used as an alternative. This goal will be reached sometime next year, as Musk said that he expects the rocket to have flown at least 10 times by the end of 2019. Its engines have up to eight percent more thrust than its predecessors, the flight controls allow for a better angle of attack to conserve fuel, there is a heat shield at the base of the rocket to protect it during reentry, and the guidance vanes are now made of titanium for better heat resistance. The landing was the first one for the Block 5 version, but the 25th for a Falcon 9 rocket with an orbital launch. It is expected to be the first SpaceX vehicle to satisfy NASA's standards for its Commercial Crew Program to carry agency astronauts to the International Space Station.
Bangabandhu-1 is now on its way to orbit after its successful launching, making Bangladesh's debut in the global space society.
