Israel has often reiterated one of its red lines that it will not allow Iran to establish a military presence in Syria.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron are calling for de-escalation in the Middle East after an alleged Iranian rocket barrage on Israeli positions in the Golan Heights prompted Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria.

In a statement issued as Israel's security cabinet met, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strike sent a "clear message" that "whoever attacks us - we will attack them sevenfold and whoever prepares to attack us - we will act against them first".

The 2015 nuclear deal imposed restrictions on the Islamic Republic's nuclear program in return for the lifting of most of the USA and global sanctions against Tehran. But Samore added that Russian Federation, a leading powerbroker in Syria and key Assad ally, wants to keep things "under control" and avoid "a big war between Israel and Iran" on Syrian territory.

Syria's state news agency SANA said opposition fighters who made a decision to stay in the suburbs of Babila, Beit Sahem and Yalda will hand over the weapons and return to normal life.

Israeli strikes overnight were one of the country's largest aerial operations in decades across the Syrian frontier and by far its broadest direct attack yet on Iranian assets.

Lieberman told the Herzliya Conference, an annual security gathering north of Tel Aviv, that "if it rains on us it will be a flood on them".

Assad spoke in an interview with the Greek Kathimerini newspaper published Thursday, before Israel carried out airstrikes in Syria in response to what it said was a cross-border rocket attack by Iranian forces.

"The main objective of these attacks, supported by the United States, is to divert public opinion from the behavior of the American president (and) his decision to leave the agreement", added Boroujerdi, referring to President Donald Trump's decision this week to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear accord.

Israeli officials have been warning of Iranian entrenchment on the Golan Heights, an area of key strategic importance for the Jewish state. But Israel and Russian Federation have maintained close communications to prevent their air forces from coming into conflict.

IDF spokesman Lt Col Jonathan Conricus said four rockets were intercepted by the Israeli Iron Dome aerial defence system, while the others fell short of their targets.
