Will Court Sports Betting Decision Weaken Feds' Fight Against Sanctuary Cities?

Trump on Wednesday met with more than a dozen conservative California officials and sheriffs who oppose the state's Democrat-led efforts to block local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The administration filed suit in March over California's so-called sanctuary laws restricting local law enforcement officers from notifying federal immigration agents when people who are undocumented are detained and about to be released.

The president thanked the "courageous mayors and sheriffs and local leaders" from across the state who, he said, "bravely resisted California's deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state laws". "You've gone through a lot, too, although it's becoming quite popular what you're doing". You have millions of people who want to see that our neighborhoods are safe and our borders are secure, " she said.

"She informed them and they all fled-or majority fled-and that whole operation took a long time to put together", Trump said.

"I think the resistance that started in the Democratic Party, this is your Republican resistance, right here", Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez told Trump. The administration's position has recently been gaining steam within California with 35 local jurisdictions having come out against the state's sanctuary legislation which went into effect in January of this year.

"The concept (of sanctuary laws) that we are even talking about is so ridiculous, " the president said.

Trump did not give specifics about the case.

Residents in heavily immigrant communities in his city report more crime so providing safe harbor to illegal immigrant criminals is hurting the immigrant communities the most, he said. At one point the president suggested that Sessions investigate whether charges for obstruction of justice could be made against Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

"You talk about an obstruction of justice, I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland California, Jeff", he said. The U.S. Department of Justice swiftly responded by filing a lawsuit against the state, soon joined by Orange County supervisors.

Last month Trump threatened to shut down the federal government in September if Congress did not provide more funding for his wall. "All citizens have the right to be protected by Federal law and strong borders".

The Justice Department declined to comment on the decision, but it had called on the court to uphold the federal law at issue - the department's usual practice when federal laws are challenged - by arguing that there was no constitutional violation.
