President Donald Trump meets with South Korean President Moon Jae In at the White House

South Korean President Moon Jae-In landed in Washington Monday to do what he can to shore up plans for a US-North Korea summit that seem to be on shaky ground. Pompeo planned to be at the White House on Tuesday for the meetings with Moon.

Moon, whose country would be highly affected if a conflict were to break out between the USA and North Korea, has been a key broker in pushing both sides to come to the negotiating table.

Moon said North Korea has the chance to be a great country, and urged Kim to "seize this opportunity".

How can I put this to you, what you did, in terms you might understand? "Kim realizes that is the only place for a deal".

However, the improving diplomatic environment has hit a rocky patch, with North Korea threatening last week to pull out of a planned June 12 summit in Singapore between leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump.

While North Korea has been willing to discuss denuclearization, Pyongyang has not yet said it will agree to do so in Singapore, and, most importantly, it has always spoken of the denuclearization of the entire Korean Peninsula.

Mr Trump did not say what conditions the USA had set for the summit but, asked by a reporter about the North's arsenal, he said "denuclearisation must take place".

Mr Trump went on: "You never know about deals.I've made a lot of deals. You never really know".

However, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was forced from power with the help of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces just eight years after striking a deal with the U.S.to give up his nuclear weapons.

Doubts over the Singapore summit put the onus on Moon, who has been encouraging engagement with North Korea since his election previous year, to get things back on track.

As Common Dreams reported, North Korea has condemned Bolton and his "Libya model" remarks last week as a "sinister" regime change threat in a statement last week.

"In this case, the US and its allies will be free from nuclear attack but North Korea's surrounding countries like China would be affected", Zhang said.

Libya is a questionable comparison for a number of reasons.

North Korea's push for nuclear weapons has long created tension on the peninsula and antagonism with the United States. Libya dismantled most of its program in months.

Departing from Beijing Capital International Airport aboard a chartered airplane of North Korea's state-run Air Koryo earlier the same day, the journalists arrived at Kalma Airport in the eastern city of Wonsan.

"The North claimed the exercises involved USA strategic nuclear assets - including nuclear-capable B-52 bombers - and violated the spirit of detente on the peninsula". The country's economic leverage over the North - China supplied 85 percent of North Korea's $3.47 billion in imports in 2015 - means it will be critical to any economic inducements offered as part of the deal.

"Kim is trying to take a hardline position before he gets to the meeting", Cronin said.

Any move toward reunification would first likely require a peace settlement to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War, which the two Koreas say they are aiming for.

A small group of worldwide journalists arrived in North Korea on Tuesday to cover the shutdown of the North's key nuclear test site.

Finding a workable plan would only emerge after months or years of negotiations.

Moon is expected to use his visit to the White House to reassure Trump that the summit is a gamble worth taking. "The hard work will have to follow". The United States would demand a strict verification process that included inspectors with access to all nuclear sites.
