China is expected to add 255 million to its urban population between 2018 and 2050, according to a report by the UN's Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The report by the UN's population division goes on to say that while the global rural population will steadily increase and reach its apogee in a few years, the trend will decline by 2050.

It is projected that 68 percent of the world's population will live in urban environments by 2050, compared to 55 percent in 2018.

Tokyo is now the world's largest city with 37 million people, followed by Delhi with 29 million, Shanghai with 26 million, and Mexico City and São Paulo, each with around 22 million inhabitants.

India, China and Nigeria are expected to account for 35% of this projected growth in urban population from 2018 to 2050.

Announcing the latest findings, DESA said most of the projected increase in urbanisation is expected to be highly-concentrated in just a handful of countries.

Speaking at a United Nations news conference, he said:"Managing urban growth to insure that it is sustainable has become one of the most important development challenges of the current century".

Motorists need to give bikers more space on the roads to keep them safe. "The numbers are growing", Jay Wonders said. If you were driving around Toledo, Wednesday night, you may have seen a large group of bicyclists on the road.

By 2030, the world is projected to have 43 megacities with more than 10 million inhabitants, majority in developing regions. The city is home to some 29 million people, and this number is set to swell in the next 10 years when the Indian capital will surpass Tokyo to become the world's most populous city. The Chinese city of Shanghai is third with 26 million, while São Paulo in Brazil and Mexico City, which each have around 22 million people living in them, are fourth.

The report also projected that the world's population itself will peak in a few years and decline by 2050. Africa and Asia are home to almost 90% of the world's rural population in 2018.

As the world continues to urbanize, sustainable development depends increasingly on the successful management of urban growth, especially in low-income and lower-middle-income countries where the pace of urbanization is projected to be the fastest.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the National Population Commission (NPC) had put Nigeria's current population at 198 million people with urban population growing at an average annual growth rate of about 6.5%.

"However, the challenge is that in many countries it's taking place so rapidly. and large slum areas have developed that are not maybe achieving the goals of sustainable development the way that we would like".

The report recommends governments adopt better integrated policies on infrastructure and social services to improve the lives of urban and rural dwellers.
