Rohingya so-called attacks on security posts in Rakhine in August previous year sparked a military operation that has sent almost 700,000 Rohingya fleeing to refugee camps in Cox´s Bazar in Bangladesh.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today called on Myanmar President U Win Myint soon after she arrived in Nay Pyi Taw for talks with the country's top leadership on key bilateral and regional issues, including the Rohingya refugee crisis.
India has had to walk a fine balance between Myanmar and Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue, as the two neighbours have continued to be at loggerheads over the fate of thousands of refugees. Swaraj underlined the need for the safe, speedy and sustainable return of displaced persons to Rakhine State.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took up the issue and promised India's help during her two-day trip to Myanmar, where she sealed a landmark land border-crossing agreement with the country.
India does not use the phrase Rohingya in official documents, parleying to Myanmar's sensitivity over this term.
India on Friday urged Myanmar to ensure the safe return of Rohingya citizens now staying in refugee camps in Bangladesh.

They also visited the Rakhine state and observed the situation, including widespread destruction of villages, as well as reception centres and transit camps under preparation by the government of Myanmar.
Myanmar authorities have said that military crackdown against the rebels was aimed at rooting out Rohingya militants who attacked police posts on the August 25.
The members also called on the government of Myanmar to grant the United Nations agencies and their partners immediate, safe and unhindered access to the Rakhine state, as well as to other domestic and global non-governmental organisations providing humanitarian assistance, and as an initial confidence-building measure.
Last December, India had signed a bilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Myanmar on the Rakhine State Development Programme.
Myanmar and Bangladesh have reached a deal on the return of hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas that sidelined the United Nations refugee agency.
Sushma also met the Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, said a statement released by the Indian External Affairs Ministry.
