NTSB Launches Probe into Tuesday Night Tesla Crash

Electric vehicle company Tesla has said it will cooperate with Florida authorities investigating a fatal collision that killed two teenagers this week. Two vehicle occupants died, and one occupant was injured.

It has emerged that the battery pack of a Tesla Model X involved in a fatal crash in March reignited six days after being extinguished.

The US National Transportation Safety Board has said it will investigate the latest accident involving a Tesla - the agency's fourth active probe into crashes of the company's electric vehicles.

While admitting that serious high-speed collisions can result in a fire, the Tesla spokesperson defended the car's safety record saying a gas auto in the United States is five times more likely to catch fire than a Tesla vehicle. Police told CNBC they are not focusing on AutoPilot as a cause, but they reportedly told NBC Miami that they are investigating the battery pack to see why the vehicle caught fire so quickly. "The goal of these investigations is to understand the impact of these emerging transportation technologies when they are part of a transportation accident".

They sent 4 investigators to Florida and they will "primarily focus on emergency response in relation to the electric vehicle battery fire, including fire department activities and towing operations".

Tesla said a failure to fix a highway safety barrier contributed to the accident.

As of late, there has been much contention between the NTSB and Tesla.

The agency is also investigating another Tesla-related fire after a Model X SUV crashed on a freeway in California in March. Tesla's billions of miles of actual driving data shows that a gas auto in the United States is five times more likely to experience a fire than a Tesla vehicle. Tesla experienced said that it withdrew from the investigation, also the bureau experienced broken its own guidelines by re-leasing "in complete information into the press".

The NTSB will be sending a team of four to Fort Lauderdale to investigate the accident, and the agency does not believe the semi-autonomous autopilot feature will be part of this investigation.

Tesla said in a statement that its "thoughts are with the families and friends affected by this tragedy" and that it's "working to establish the facts of the incident and offer our full cooperation to local authorities", but have said nothing on cooperation with the NTSB investigation.
