Foster entered the Alabama locker room following its 24-6 win against Clemson in this season's Sugar Bowl, much to the delight of his former defensive teammates, who mobbed him upon his arrival. He started all the games that he appeared in, finishing the year with 72 tackles and a pass defended. Prior to being chosen in the draft, he was dismissed from the NFL Scouting Combine, having gotten into a confrontation with a hospital worker. He then failed a mandatory drug test, which came back as dilute and, per league rules, had to be treated as positive. Foster won the Butkus Award, which goes to college football's top linebacker, and was a unanimous All-American and All-SEC selection that year.

He led the team in total tackles with 115 as a senior, while also collecting 13 tackles for loss, five sacks and eight quarterback hurries in 2016.
