Donald Trump has pulled out of his UK visit

In a tweet late Thursday, Trump said he canceled the upcoming trip and criticized the "Obama administration" sale of the old embassy as a "bad deal".

But clearly, the State Department struck this "bad deal" so Trump would find out about it years later and be forced to cancel his London visit.

He has blamed the former Obama Administration for selecting the site even though records indicate that it had been initiated by the George W Bush administration in October 2008, before Barack Obama came to the scene.

President Donald Trump meets with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

There had been strong opposition to the invitation, at first over Trump's travel ban on Muslim-majority countries, and then most recently his re-tweet of a far-right organization, Britain First.

His decision not to come was welcomed by critics outraged by the U.S. travel ban on Muslim-majority countries, and more recently, Trump 's decision to re-tweet anti-Muslim videos posted by a British far-right organisation.

But despite Trump blaming his predecessor, the decision to move the embassy was taken before Barack Obama took office in January 2009 with the US Embassy & Consulates in the United Kingdom saying in October 2008 the embassy would be relocated for security reasons. Meanwhile, London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, appeared rather pleased about the decision.

At the time, US state department officials agreed to sell the Grosvenor Square building, in west London, to a Qatari Real Estate company, highlighting a lack of space and security concerns.

However, Tory MP Tom Tugendhat, Chairman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, told Radio 4 that Mr. Trump's decision has nothing to do with the UK's relationship with the U.S.

Mr Trump had been expected to visit the new £750m ($1bn) home for American diplomats on the banks of the River Thames as early as next month.

The initial plans for a formal state visit by Trump, who was invited shortly after being inaugurated by Prime Minister Theresa May, were scuttled amid activist plans to stage mass protests, The Guardianreports.

Madame Tussauds put a wax version of the commander in chief in front of the new $1 billion building.

Responding to Trump on Twitter, former Labour leader Ed Miliband wrote: "Nope it's because nobody wanted you to come". "He has been to countries all over the world and yet he has not been to the one with whom he is closest".

"We looked at all our options, including renovation of our current building on Grosvenor Square", then-Ambassador Robert Tuttle said.

The trans-Atlantic alliance between the USA and Britain has been shaky ever since Trump assumed the presidency in January.

The current ambassador, Robert "Woody" Johnson, said the change was necessary even though the USA had been linked to Grosvenor Square for more than 200 years.

The leader of Wandsworth Council has hit back at Donald's Trump claim that the new American embassy has been moved to an "off-location".
