In a first, women in Saudi Arabia attend a soccer match

Females were in attendance at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah to witness Al-Ahli defeat Al-Batin 5-0.

For the first time, women in Saudi Arabia entered a sports stadium to watch a soccer match between two local teams in Jeddah.

Women fans filed into a stadium in the city of Jeddah on Friday, through family gates into family seating. "But thank god that it came in the right time, and hopefully what's to come will be even more lovely for women".

The introduction of women to soccer matches in Saudi is part of reforms in the Kingdom with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 32, seen by many as the face of that change.

It's the latest of a number of firsts for Saudi women; later this year, they'll be able to drive.

"Today the percentage of those who participate in exercise and sports is only 13 percent", said Hayfaa al-Sabban, who heads a sport organisation.
