Fox Boss on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Revival: 'It's Something We Talk About Frequently'
Would you want to see a Buffy revival at FOX with Joss Whedon returning? He refrained from confirming such a move for fear of not being able "to get out of the building alive".
"'Buffy' is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back", said Fox TV group chair Gary Newman at the INTV Conference (via Variety). But he did allow, "It's something we talk about frequently". During its seven-season run, the drama-comedy-supernatural mishmash created by Joss Whedon represented a lot of storytelling highs, while behind the scenes, it launched the careers of a number of great writers, including "UnREAL" co-creator Marti Noxon, "Once Upon a Time" executive producer Jane Espenson, "The Martian" screenwriter Drew Goddard, and many others.
Newman didn't specify a reboot or a revival, but clarified that he wasn't announcing anything official. Most of the time it starts with a creator coming in. Admittedly, we chased The X-Files for a while. Fox says it's up to Whedon to bring "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" back. "The 24 franchise... we'll always want it".
The primary advantage that reboots present, Newman admits, is built in marketing in an increasingly crowded scripted television market. Newman, who joked that if he were to actually announce anything about the Scooby gang, he "wouldn't get out of the building alive", acknowledged that reboots have a built-in advantage because "in this world with almost 500 scripted series, getting a leg up on marketing is an opportunity".
Buffy the Vampire Slayer celebrated its 21st anniversary over the weekend. The TV show is now celebrating 21 years since it first hit The WB, but only last year, Whedon slammed the idea of reboots for never living up to their originals.

Sure ... either way, while I get why the series is still big enough to be considered a worthwhile investment, I would argue that we don't need a reboot of Buffy-not now, anyway. We will find them, and cut their hearts out one by one.
According to a March 13 report by Deadline, Newman opened up about the possibility of bringing Buffy The Vampire Slayer back to television.
If a revival does happen, it does call into question what happens to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, which continued the show's story after the season 7 finale.
