Chinese space station expected to crash down before April 3
And sometimes that junk falls back to Earth.
The not-for-profit Aerospace Corporation predicts that Tiangong-1 will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere on 1 April, Easter Sunday - or three days either side of that date.
For over a year, scientists have been trying to figure out when Chinese space lab Tiangong-1 is going to plummet back to its home planet.
"Only one person has ever been recorded as being hit by a piece of space debris, and, fortunately, she was not injured".
Or, in the words of fear-allaying scientists, Tiangong-1 was experiencing an "uncontrolled reentry".
The first Chinese orbital docking occurred between Tiangong-1 and an unpiloted Shenzhou spacecraft on November 2, 2011.
Tiangong-1 was lofted in late September 2011, to help test the docking and rendezvous technologies required to build a bona fide space station, which China aims to do by the mid-2020s.
The European Space Agency says that there have never been any confirmed casualties due to falling space debris.
The satellite is expected to fall out of orbit between March 29 and April 4 and reenter the atmosphere somewhere between 43 degrees North and 43 degrees South, according to the Aerospace Corporation.
However space experts have said the potential danger to humans is minimal - the odds of debris from the vessel hitting a human are estimated to be less than one in 1 trillion.
According to the non-profit research firm Aerospace, parts of the burning space station "may be visible and will likely last up to a minute or more, depending on time of day, visibility, conditions and the observer's location".
"While a wide area could be affected, it is important to point out that a large part of the Earth is covered by water or is uninhabited".
"Hence the personal probability of being hit by a piece of debris from the Tiangong-1 is actually 10 million times smaller than the yearly chance of being hit by lightning". "In the history of spaceflight, no known person has ever been harmed by reentering space debris", the Aerospace said in January.
