Tony Tooke, the head of the Forest Service, resigned Wednesday in the wake of reports revealing sexual misconduct allegations made against the agency and Tooke himself.

The PBS investigation built on investigations by TheDC and others that have found a culture going back decades where sexual harassment and assault is widespread, and women are punished and retaliated against when they attempt to speak out.

"I can not combat every inaccuracy that is reported in the news media", he wrote.

"You can report it and face retaliation, or you can do nothing", Myers said another colleague told her.

Tooke's resignation came after PBS NewsHour reported the US Agriculture Department was probing misconduct complaints about his relationship with subordinates prior to his current role at the forestry agency. He was named chief of the Forest Service last September.

Sonny Perdue, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, appointed Tooke as Forest Service Chief in August previous year, replacing Tom Tidwell.

When asked about the allegations, Tooke said in an email: "I'm in support of this investigation, and I have fully cooperated from the start". Chief Tooke has determined that it is best for the Forest Service, its future, and its employees that he step aside.

He said he must think about what is best for his family.

In response to the reports of misconduct, the agency reportedly told employees the stories shared with PBS were "important to hear, hard and heart-wrenching as they may be". "I expect to be held to the same standards as every other Forest Service employee". In response to the PBS story, Forest Service Associate Chief Dan Jiron said the agency had taken steps to address the issue but "we have more work to do", PBS reported.

Forest Service spokesman Byron James declined to say if the investigation into Tooke would continue and a replacement was not immediately announced. "Each employee deserves the very best leadership to bring about the cultural change necessary to rid the Forest Service of harassment, bullying, and retaliation".

The Montana Republican said he planned to ask for a Senate hearing on combatting sexual harassment in the U.S. Forest Service.

"In my experience, in order to effectively lead any organization, you must have the moral authority to inspire its members to work toward the goal of continuous improvement", Perdue also said in the statement. He then went on to thanks him for doing the right thing to ensure the Forest Service's future.

"I have loved the Forest Service, our employees, and our conservation and public service mission since joining at age 18".

"I don't know about if he dropped it intentionally, but he definitely knew I was there and didn't care".
