Mahavir, born in Bihar in 599 BC, was the 24th and last Jain Tirthankara (spiritual teacher). He is said to be the twenty-fourth and the last Tirthankara (Teaching God). The teachings and stories of Lord Mahavir hold a lot of significance in the Jain religious history. As per the Hindu calendar, the occasion falls on the 13th day of the Chaitra month which falls in the month of March or April.
One of the most important festivals of the Jain community, Mahavir Jayanti is also known as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak.
The Vice President of India, in his message stated, "I convey my warm greetings and good wishes to the people of our country on the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti".
