No justification for Russian move to expel diplomats

Russia expels diplomats in 'mirror' retaliation

Russian Federation will expel 60 U.S. diplomats and close the U.S. Consulate in St. Petersburg in a "tit-for-tat" in response to Western actions after an ex-spy poisoning, Kremlin's news agency Tass reported on Thursday.

Russia kicked out the diplomats after the US and other nations kicked out Russian diplomats to punish Moscow for alleged involvement in an ex-spy's poisoning in the United Kingdom.

The Foreign Minister said Russian Federation would not only provide a mirror response to the West's steps but even "more than that".

British health officials say the daughter of a Russian ex-spy has responded well to treatment and is no longer in critical condition after a nerve-agent attack.

Nauert also mentioned that 28 other countries have joined the U.S.in removing Russian spies in retaliation.

Mr. Putin and his government have denied any involvement in the March 4 attack on Sergei V. Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, and have tried to cast blame on Britain, the United States, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and others.

Last week, US President Donald Trump announced the expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats, leading to a succession of similar announcements by 15 other countries.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert on Thursday castigated Russian Federation for expelling 60 US diplomats from the country and closing the USA consulate in St. Petersburg, saying that Moscow has "no justification" for doing so.

Russia's Foreign Ministry says Britain, the USA, the Czech Republic and Sweden all have researched a nerve agent that London said was used to poison an ex-Russian spy in Britain.

"Based on the reciprocity principle, as a retaliatory measure, 58 employees of the US Embassy in Moscow and two staff members of the Consulate General in Yekaterinburg have been declared personae non gratae for the activities incompatible with their diplomatic status", the Russian Foreign Ministry said, according to the Russian state-run TASS news agency.

Zakharova charged that Britain, the US, the Czech Republic and Sweden have all researched the nerve agent that London said was used to poison the Skripals. Britain and its allies have dismissed previous Moscow claims that they possessed that type of nerve agent.

"There is no justification for the Russian response". Western officials say that numerous Russians are actually spies, and that the expulsions will hinder Russian espionage efforts.

Yulia Skripal and her father, an ex-spy, were found unconscious in the English city of Salisbury on March 4. "Her condition is now stable".

British authorities say a Soviet-era nerve toxin called Novichok was used in an attempt to murder the pair.

Russian Federation has vehemently denied any role in the Salisbury attack.

Sergei Skripal, 66, remains in critical condition, the hospital said.

Britain says he and his daughter, who was visiting from Russian Federation, were poisoned with a nerve agent developed in Soviet times and that it must have come from Russian Federation.

Moments before the ministry announcement, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russian Federation would respond in kind to the mass expulsion of diplomats by Western governments which include, apart from the United States and Britain, most member states of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the European Union.
