Security personnel take cover as smoke billows Friday from the French Institute in Ouagadougou

Heavy smoke rose from the army joint chief of staff's office in Ouagadougou, and witnesses said loud explosions were still heard around the military headquarters in the western part of the capital's city center and far from the other area under attack that houses the embassies, the prime minister's office and United Nations offices.

This is the third major attack in Ouagadougou in the past two years.

Communications minister Remy Danjuinou confirmed that Islamic extremists attacked both the French Embassy and the Burkina Faso army headquarters in Ouagadougou.

Burkina Faso is a former French colony and, like several others countries in west and central Africa, retains close security and trade links with Paris.

A French diplomatic source said that no French nationals were killed in the attacks. The two targets are a few meters away from the prime minister's office in the city.

The government announced that four attackers were killed in the incident.

"The situation is under control", said French envoy Jean-Yves Le Diane, quoted by France Press.

Burkina Faso's police director general says the capital is being attacked by suspected Islamic extremists after explosions and gunfire were heard in Ouagadougou early Friday.

For the time being, authorities in Burkina Faso have no information on possible victims.

In August, extremists opened fire as patrons dined at a restaurant, killing at least 18 people. Two members of Burkina Faso's paramilitary gendarmes were killed defending the embassy, he said.

Security forces struggled to contain the attacks.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for an attack on a restaurant and hotel in Ouagadougou in January 2016 in which 30 people were killed. But the terror threat in Burkina Faso is increasingly homegrown, experts say. His association, Ansarul Islam, is considered a terrorist group by Burkina Faso's government.

Longtime President Blaise Compaore was ousted in a popular uprising in late 2014, and a coup was mounted the following year but ultimately failed. Increased attacks staged at the border with Mali have forced thousands to flee over the past year.
