Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has been charged with perjury after his testimony in former Dinamo Zagreb executive director Zdravko Mamic's corruption trial.

The statement did not name Modric, as is a standard practice in Croatia, but said it charged a 32-year old Croatian citizen, citing details from his testimony. He joined Real Madrid in 2012.

Mamic, along with his brother Zoran and two others, are accused of abusing their power to embezzling over €15 million from the 18-time national champions, while also swindling €1.5 million from the government through player transfers. He is now set to captain Croatia at the World Cup this summer, with Croatia sharing a group with Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland.

Modric gave an account of how he signed an annex to a contract whilst with Dinamo that covered certain criteria relating to any transfer he may be a part of while playing in Croatia. "... Prosecutors say the annex-which allowed Modric to receive half the transfer fee-was actually signed in 2008 when he had already left the club".

Modric has also paid a settlement in Spain to settle a tax evasion case pertaining to his image rights earnings in 2013 and 2014, and is also under investigation for his financial holdings in the Isle of Man - a popular tax haven for United Kingdom residents just off the coast of England.

Modric could not immediately be reached for comment.

Modric, who grew up as a refugee in Zadar on the Dalmatian coast, was highly popular in Croatia where he has a reputation for modesty, however the testimony has tarnished his image.

Modric was charged with "committing the criminal offence of giving false testimony" last June.

Mamic is considered the most powerful man in Croatian football and his connections extend into many spheres of public life.

Most Croatian football fans see Mamic as the real boss of the Croatian Football Federation and believe its formal chief Davor Suker is merely his puppet.
