Sky adds Netflix subs package

Sky Plc chief executive Jeremy Darroch said customers with its latest decoders would be able to subscribe to a new Sky service containing Netflix later in the year.

In addition, Sky will create a special entertainment TV pack for subscribers that will include Sky and Netflix content side-by-side.

Netflix is the world's largest internet entertainment service with around 117 million customers in over 190 countries, who have access to more than 140 million hours of TV shows and films every day. "Our recent announcements mean we will extend our leadership in delivering customers the best viewing and user experience in Europe".

Sky is yet to announce pricing for the new entertainment package, but here's hoping it offers a saving on the £9.95 you now have to pay for a separate 4K Netflix subscription.

The partnership will allow users to stream content from Netflix's plethora of U.S. shows in the same place as the exclusive shows offered by Europe-based Sky.

But although it might seem like a boon to customers, some say this is just a case of Sky playing "catch-up".

He added: "Sky's customers will be able to seamlessly access and enjoy all the best entertainment in one place". In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Sky will launch Netflix as a standalone app on NOW TV's family of streaming devices.

Details of how the partnership will work are few and far between, but it is clear that Netflix will only be available on the SkyQ box and the Now TV online streaming service. Thankfully, the Now TV streaming box will also get the Netflix app. It won't be included as part of the Sky Q bundles, though, so you'll still need to pay that £9.99 monthly fee.

The new package is being rolled out across Europe, with the United Kingdom being first to get the deal, before it moves into Italy, Germany and Austria. The company had annual reported revenues of £12.9 billion in 2016/17, and is Europes leading investor in television content with an annual programming spend of around £7 billion.

Broadcaster Sky and streaming giant Netflix are joining forces in a new Europe-wide partnership that could change the shape of TV and the TV industry forever.

Up to now, Sky has been trying to go it alone with its own offerings, but research has shown that people don't see Sky Q as an alternative to Netflix, but rather a compliment.
