Newport said: "Four aid workers were killed, one aid worker was injured, and one aid worker is missing, feared abducted".

Boko Haram has claimed more than 20,000 lives and displaced thousands more since it commenced a war against the Nigerian State in 2009.

Two of the aid workers who died were contractors with the International Organization for Migration, working as coordinators at a camp for 55,000 displaced people in Rann, the United Nations said.

Newport added that the female abducted during the attack worked as a nurse in the camp.

Mohammed Abdiker, IOM director of operations and emergencies, said the militants had "superior firepower" and were "armed with automatic weapons, rocket propelled grenades and gun trucks".

In January 2017, a botched Nigerian air strike meant to hit jihadist fighters killed at least 112 people as aid workers distributed food.

This latest feat comes a week after the military has been criticized for not doing enough in the abduction of over 100 students of Government Girls Science and Technical College Dapchi, in Yobe state, after gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists invaded the school.
